Methodist Church Ghana Responds to Supreme Court Suit Involving Wesley Girls’ High School

Accra, November 28, 2025 — The Methodist Church Ghana has issued an official press release addressing a pending Supreme Court suit involving Wesley Girls’ High School (WGHS). The suit, Shafic Osman v. The Board of Governors, Attorney-General & Ghana Education Service, reportedly concerns allegations of discriminatory practices at the school.

According to the Church, which is the proprietor of Wesley Girls’ High School, it became aware of the case through media reports and is currently taking steps to obtain official court documents. Although the Church notes that it has not yet been formally notified, it confirms that its legal team is preparing to take the necessary action to safeguard the Church’s interests.

Church Rejects Allegations of Discrimination

The Methodist Church strongly denies claims that WGHS, as a government-assisted school, engages in discriminatory practices against students of other faiths. The statement emphasizes the school’s long-standing tradition of inclusivity since its founding in 1836.

The Church highlights that for nearly two centuries, WGHS has trained students of various religious and cultural backgrounds—including Methodists, Adventists, Muslims, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Hindus, Catholics, Pentecostals, and others—without prejudice regarding race, religion, or creed.

Historical Mission and Educational Philosophy

Founded by Harriet Wrigley, wife of the second Methodist Missionary to the then Gold Coast, WGHS has maintained its commitment to developing the girl-child based on the principle of training the Head, Heart, and Hand.

The Church stressed that its partnership with the Government of Ghana since the 1960s has not altered the school’s foundational Christian and Methodist identity. It also described discrimination as “fundamentally inconsistent with Christian teaching” and incompatible with the Church’s mission.

Commitment to Christian and Moral Formation

WGHS continues to anchor its values in Christian teachings, as reflected in its motto:

“Live Pure, Speak True, Right Wrong, Follow the King.”

The press release also cites the first stanza of the School Hymn, beginning with “We build our school on thee, O Lord…”, as a demonstration of the school’s enduring commitment to moral and spiritual formation.

Call for Respect for School Traditions

The Methodist Church concludes by noting that the only expectation for all admitted students is adherence to the school’s long-standing traditions and established framework—designed to foster unity, discipline, academic excellence, and character development.

As the legal processes unfold, the Church assures the public that it will continue to protect both its interests and the legacy of Wesley Girls’ High School.
